TTAL Ramps Up Marketing Efforts with Strategic Island Tours for International Travel Trade and Media

Posted May 22, 2025

In a strategic move to boost Tobago’s appeal in key international markets, the Tobago Tourism Agency Limited (TTAL) recently welcomed travel agents, tour operators and media from the United States, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom, to experience the authentic charm that defines Tobago Beyond Ordinary: Unspoilt, Untouched, Undiscovered – the official destination brand of the island. Embracing ‘slow travel’ in its truest form, these curated visits were more than promotional activities. They provided immersive opportunities to share the island’s unique story with the aim of showcasing what makes the Tobago experience truly beyond ordinary. From its uncommercialized charm and untouched natural beauty to its strong sense of community and the authenticity of its culture, guests experienced first-hand the essence of a destination that still feels undiscovered.

Throughout the trips, the delegation was introduced to Tobago’s rich and diverse offerings including cultural staples like Sunday School, Tobago Harvest, and the iconic Buccoo Goat and Crab Festival, and a vast array of eco adventures ranging from catching a boat ride to Little Tobago for birdwatching, Goat Island for snorkelling and the famed Nylon Pool, to exploring the scenic trails and waterfalls of the Main Ridge Forest Reserve – the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere.

The delegation also had the opportunity to enjoy several island traditions while immersing themselves in the history and culture of Tobago – from liming with locals in Charlotteville before sailing to secluded beaches like Pirates Bay to sampling freshly baked treats from the Castara Dirt Oven and locally brewed coffee from Tonci Chocolates. These experiences resonated deeply with attendees, reinforcing the island’s unique market positioning as an unspoilt and untouched Caribbean escape.

“When you come here, what you’re getting is a really local, authentic experience and I think that’s exactly what people are looking for these days,” shared American travel writer Heather Greenwood-Davis. Tom Lundy, Associate Editor at the Canadian Geographic, shared similar sentiments, adding “what makes Tobago special…the fact that it’s a Caribbean Island with not too many people and it’s still super authentic, super true to its roots and its origins.”

The trips also highlighted local tourism operators, providing marketing opportunities and heightened exposure for several hoteliers, restaurants, food outlets, tour guides and artisans, among others. Speaking following her interactive demonstration of making curried crab and dumplings, Meisha Trim, Owner of Ms. Trims thanked TTAL for the initiative, adding “we really love this marketing idea and partnerships like this that can go a long way for the brand and for the island.” She added, “Tourism has moved from just enjoying the sun, sea and sand, but actually creating experiences and this has been an experience I know they will never forget.”

Regina Dumas, Owner Cuffie River Nature Retreat, one of the many properties visited during the tours, also commended the Agency, noting the positive impact such initiatives have had on bookings in the past. She also highlighted the importance of such marketing activities for monitoring and maintaining standards, adding that “it helps you to see what it (your business) looks like through the eyes of another, because you might get too used to seeing it and…overlook some things that should not be overlooked, so I think it is a useful exercise in which TTAL engages.”

With customized travel packages and in-depth storytelling set to roll out across various platforms in the coming months, these trips are expected to play a critical role in generating increased visibility and interest in the destination. As Tobago prepares for the operationalisation of its new ANR Robinson International Airport terminal, this campaign was also strategically timed to stimulate travel demand, converting interest into bookings, especially for the upcoming 2025/2026 winter season. By inspiring confidence and curiosity among global travel professionals, TTAL is laying the groundwork for increased referrals and visitor arrivals to Tobago.
