Posted Aug 21, 2024

From the island's tropical rainforest and mangrove swamps to its mesmerising coastline and cascading hills, Tobago is a naturally welcoming landscape for over 260 species of birds, making it one of the top birdwatching destinations in the world. The Tobago Tourism Agency Limited (TTAL) delivered a stellar showcase of this prized attraction to hundreds of visitors at the 2024 Global Bird Fair which was hosted from July 12 – 14, in Ruthland, United Kingdom (UK).

Attended by over 13,000 visitors this year, the annual Global Bird Fair is celebrated among seasoned and novice birdwatchers, bird photographers, and enthusiasts as one of the largest birdwatching events in the world. With its vast popularity among nature enthusiasts, the Global Bird Fair presented a prime marketing opportunity for the Agency to promote Tobago’s diverse birding and ecotourism in the UK source market, which has seen a growing demand for eco-friendly tourist destinations and attractions

Speaking on the success of TTAL’s participation at the event, the Agency’s Director of Marketing and Communications, Mr. Jason Antoine said:

"The birding industry is a key market for Tobago, and events like this allow us to showcase our unique natural assets to a global audience. Tobago is home to one of the most diverse and dense bird populations in the Caribbean, making it a premier destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike. Each year, thousands of visitors are drawn to our shores to experience the island’s vibrant birdlife, contributing significantly to our eco-tourism sector. Our presence at the Bird Fair reinforces our commitment to promoting Tobago as a leading birding destination and also strengthens the Tobago Beyond Ordinary brand."

As an eco-destination, Tobago currently boasts the highest number of Green Key-certified accommodation properties in the English-speaking Caribbean which signals its commitment to responsible tourism, and in 2020, the island was awarded the UNESCO Man on the Biosphere designation which is UNESCO’s leading initiative in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

At the fair, TTAL offered a dynamic display of the island’s offerings which included an expert presentation and lecture from Zolani Frank of Zee’s Birding Hike and Nature Tours in Tobago. Other expert birding guides and tours from Tobago highlighted at the booth were Darren Henry of Darren Henry Tours, William Trim from Nature To and Fro Tours, Jason Radix from Eureka Natural History Tours, and Newton George from NG & Company Nature Tours. Scores of visitors also expressed interest in booking tours to several notable sites across the island including the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, Adventure Farm and Nature Reserve, Cuffie River Nature Retreat and Castara Retreats.

Overall, the Global Bird Fair supported TTAL’s efforts in inspiring travel to the destination, while giving potential visitors a deeper understanding of Tobago, both as a world-class birding destination, and as a site enriched with culture and a vast array nature-based activities.
