Driving Sustainable Growth across the Tobago Tourism Sector
Posted Aug 15, 2025
Tobago’s tourism story is one of resilience, renewal, and unstoppable potential. Over the past two decades, the island has navigated shifting global trends, evolving traveler expectations, and unprecedented challenges - emerging each time with a stronger, more vibrant vision for the future.
While international arrivals decreased from 87,796 in 2005 to 27,589 in 2017, this period was not a tale of decline, but rather a time of transition. Changes in airline routes, shifting economic climates, and the need for a refreshed destination identity set the stage for bold, decisive action. That year, the Tobago Tourism Agency Limited (TTAL) was established to chart a new course, launching the Tobago Beyond Ordinary brand and implementing targeted, high-impact marketing campaigns. By 2019, international arrivals had already grown by 8%, and Tobago’s revitalized approach earned global recognition with the Best National Tourism Board Campaign award at the 2019 International Travel and Tourism Awards.
The global pandemic temporarily slowed the momentum, with arrivals falling to 14,157 in 2022. Yet Tobago met this challenge head-on, rolling out strategic recovery plans that have since delivered a 52% increase in international arrivals from 2022 to 2024. This success has been matched by worldwide acclaim – placement among the Top Four Most Desirable Islands Worldwide in the Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards for three consecutive years, a spot among the Top 20 Best Scuba Diving Destinations by Travel + Leisure in 2024, and inclusion in Lonely Planet’s Top 10 Countries to Visit in 2025 alongside Trinidad.
Over the past year alone, TTAL has:
- Engaged over 500 UK trade professionals through online sessions, building confidence in selling destination Tobago.
- Partnered with Barbados in Germany to connect with over 200 travel agents, tour operators, and media, to boost winter bookings for the coming period.
- Hosted leading trade and media from the US, Canada, Germany, and the UK for on-island immersion in Tobago’s authenticity.
- Strengthened Tobago’s reputation in niche tourism - diving, birding, and eco-adventures - through global event representation.
Looking ahead, TTAL will keep building demand through a dynamic blend of trade engagement, consumer outreach, and digital storytelling. In September, the Agency will spearhead a strategic Canada push, engaging at Trinbago Toronto, the Canada Bridal Show, and the ACTA Trade Summit to deepen partnerships and expand market reach.
Equally important is TTAL’s commitment to strengthening the tourism sector from within. A current island-wide survey is gathering insights from tourism stakeholders to shape impactful training programmes - ensuring service excellence and competitiveness remain at the heart of Tobago’s offering.
Tobago’s growth is no accident - it is the result of deliberate, sustained action and a shared belief in the island’s boundless potential. As we continue this journey, TTAL invites our tourism community, partners, and friends of Tobago everywhere to be part of shaping a bright, beyond-ordinary future.
Let’s work together to take Tobago beyond the ordinary.
